Wandsworth Prep pupils through to second round of Radio 2’s 500 Word Story Competition

Four pupils at Wandsworth Prep School have made it through to the second round of Radio 2’s 500 Word Story Competition, with the winners expected to be announced on 8th June 2018.

Each year, Radio 2 launch the largest short story writing competition in the country where children can write up to 500 words on a story about any subject of their choice. The competition was started seven years ago by presenter, Chris Evans, who was eager to get children excited about reading and writing. The competition is now one of the most successful story-writing competitions for children in the world. 

Pupils in years 4, 5 and 6 all submitted stories after a half-term committed to short story analysis and story development. Each story was judged against five criteria: originality, characterisation, plot, enjoyment and language.

Commenting on the recent news, Headteacher, Bridget Saul, said: “Last year there were over 130,000 entries into the competition, so for four pupils to be put forward from our school of 94 children, is extremely exciting and is testament to the high standards our pupils set themselves combined with our inspirational teaching team who go above and beyond to instil a love of reading and writing from an early age.”

The 500 Words Final will be broadcast live from Hampton Court Palace on BBC Radio 2's Chris Evans Breakfast Show, on Friday 8th June.
