Wandsworth Prep pupils delight guests with World War II Museum of Memories

Posted on: 15 Dec 2016

On Wednesday 14th December, parents and guests were welcomed to Wandsworth Prep School’s “Museum of Memories” – an informative and entertaining event showcasing the pupils’ learning from their Autumn Term project on World War II.

At the start of the term, pupils in Years 3 to 5 were set the task of restoring a fictitious museum which had been destroyed by fire and contained World War II artefacts. Over the course of the term, each pupil became an expert in a specific area of World War II – from Adolf Hitler and evacuation, to rationing and The Blitz.  With children and staff dressed in World War II attire, the museum informed and entertained guests with individual presentations of each pupil’s work, a World War II radio broadcast room, an art gallery and a cinema room showing the pupils’ very own propaganda video. The event culminated in a theatre performance based on real events from the war.

The project was designed to incorporate a wide range of subjects, including creative writing in English, pencil portraits in Art, making Anderson shelters in Design and Technology, using mapping skills to compare wartime and present day Wandsworth in Geography, and engaging with the texts of Michael Morpurgo in reading.

Commenting on the event, Headteacher Bridget Saul, said:  “Our end of term project events are a clear demonstration of how we approach teaching and learning here at Wandsworth Prep and what makes us so unique; unique in the sense that our unfailing belief that creativity and achievement go hand in hand see our pupils reach standards to which they aspire and, at the same time, acquire skills that will prepare them for success far beyond our walls.”

Sam Selby, Education Director at Bellevue Education, attended the event and wrote a short piece about her thoughts on the event which you can read here.
