School book raises vital funds for charity

Posted on: 04 Apr 2018

A book of stories written by children from Forest Preparatory School in Timperley has raised more than £300 for a north west charity.

The book features stories written by children from all years at the school and so far nearly 100 copies have been sold. All the profits from the book are going towards the School’s PA charity for this year, Reuben's Retreat, raising £308.95 to date.

The project was led by Hayley Bardsley, a Year 5 Teaching Assistant at the School.

Hayley said: “The idea for the book came about in November. Myself and another teacher, Julie McClearn, were having a conversation with a couple of the children in breakfast club about story writing and thought it would be nice to make a book.”

She added: “It has been a long process but the children were all very keen to be involved and the support from the parents so far has been fantastic.”

The School involved all the children in the book-writing process, with its youngest children in Nursery and Reception producing adult-led stories using puppets. Year 1 produced their stories with the help of their Year 5 reading buddies. The rest of the children have written their stories independently either at home or supported by Mrs McClearn during her creative writing club.

A group of Year 6 children from the School visited Reuben’s Retreat in Glossop on Monday 26th March to hand over a copy of the book and tour the facilities with Reuben’s mum Nicola.

Hayley said: “We had a great visit to Reuben's Retreat. Reuben's mum gave the children a talk about the Retreat, why it was set up and what they currently offer to families. She also explained each further phase of the development and how much it would cost.

The children had a tour of the grounds and then Nicola showed us inside the building that is yet to be developed. The next phase of the project is to install a hydrotherapy pool.  It was lovely to see how much the children enjoyed the visit and realise how their fundraising will make a difference to children and families across the region. They are now brainstorming other ways they can fundraise!”
