Gateway School pupils celebrate Roald Dahl 100

Posted on: 26 Oct 2016

Pupils at Gateway School recently took part in a special day of activities in celebration of ‘Roald Dahl 100’ - marking 100 years since the birth of the much-loved author.

The independent day school, situated in the Buckinghamshire village where Roald Dahl lived and wrote for 36 years, organised a range of engaging activities for pupils to enjoy.

The school’s youngest pupils, aged two to four, explored The BFG and made their own giant ears, before going on a listening walk around the school grounds.

Children in Reception focused on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and enjoyed tasting different varieties of chocolate, using their maths skills to create graphs and charts to illustrate the classes’ favourite flavours.

Year 2 pupils enjoyed reading George’s Marvellous Medicine and used syringes and other measuring equipment to manufacture their own ‘Marvellous Medicine’, whilst at the top of the school, children in Year 6 took on the roles of Roald Dahl’s famous characters as living statues, in the school playground. Each child played the part of a character which could be brought to life at the push of a button. Pupils from across the school, as well as visiting parents were invited to animate the characters and to watch the performances, as Year 6 depicted scenes from Dahl’s books.

Mrs Sue La Farge, Headteacher at Gateway School, said: “We regularly create cross-curricular, whole school projects that engage all pupils, from our two-year-olds to those reaching the end of their primary education in Year 6. Roald Dahl’s much-loved books are very popular here at Gateway and we all had a wonderful time celebrating Roald Dahl 100. Well done to all of the pupils for their fantastic efforts.”
