Forest Prep pupil finalist in National Young Writer Awards

Posted on: 07 Aug 2018

A Year 3 pupil from Forest Preparatory School was recently shortlisted as a finalist in the acclaimed Wicked Young Writer Awards 2018.

Sophie Filobbos, now aged eight, was shortlisted as one of 20 finalists in the 5-7 years age category in the national competition, which was sponsored by West End Musical Wicked in association with the National Literacy Trust. Sophie and her family attended a glittering award ceremony held at London’s Apollo Victoria Theatre on Thursday, June 21st.

Championed by Patron Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cornwall, the Awards encourage young people aged five to 25 years to use writing as a way of expressing themselves, producing unique and original pieces of prose and poetry.

This year, more than 4,500 entries were received by the judges, who included writer, broadcaster and former Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families Ed Balls, and writer and first Young People's Laureate for London Caleb Femi. Author and illustrator of the How to Train Your Dragon books Cressida Cowell returned as Head Judge for the fourth consecutive year, together with long-standing judges Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust and Michael McCabe, Executive Producer (UK) of Wicked.

Sophie’s mum, Anna Walsham, said: “The awards were quite incredible and were a fantastic celebration of talented young writers. Sophie and other younger age-group finalists enjoyed a short workshop with poet and writer Coral Rumble, before the main ceremony. It was a thrilling day to witness the awards and hear the incredible winning stories.”

Jennifer Eley, Year 3 teacher at Forest Preparatory School, said: “Congratulations to our very talented Year 3 writer, Sophie. With her ever-engaging pieces of writing, JK Rowling will no doubt have competition in years to come!”

Jonathan Douglas, Director of the National Literacy Trust commented on this year's finalists' entries: "Every year, the Wicked Young Writer Awards inspire wonderfully creative and thoughtful writing - and this year was no exception. The awards give us a unique insight into what matters most to children and young people today, and this year we were inundated with heartfelt entries on older generations, grandparents and memory loss. Well done to everyone who took part in this year's awards and congratulations to all of the finalists. We hope the awards will continue to give voice to your ideas and passions.”
