Elmhurst School pupil wins National Literacy Trust prize

Posted on: 06 Jul 2018

A pupil at Elmhurst School for Boys in South Croydon has won a national writing competition, organised by the National Literacy Trust in partnership with the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society.

Young authors from across the country submitted written pieces for the competition around the theme of ‘Copyright Knights’ and ‘Plagiarism Pirates’.

Elias Atkinson, aged eight, visited the House of Commons with his family and teachers to receive his award, presented by Lauren Child, author of children’s book series Charlie and Lola.

Elias said: “I honestly did not think I would win. I was surprised to win out of the whole country and I feel very proud. I love writing and English is one of my favourite subjects. This has given me the confidence to do more writing.”

Tony Padfield, Head Teacher at Elmhurst School for Boys, said: “We are very proud of Elias for such a fantastic achievement. Here at Elmhurst, we celebrate the talents of each and every boy and our broad curriculum helps pupils to develop their own interests and reach their full potential. It is wonderful to see pupils expressing their creativity and showcasing their talents at a national level. Congratulations, Elias!”
