Elmhurst School partners with local software engineers to provide Computer Programming Club

Posted on: 13 Feb 2019

Pupils at Elmhurst School for Boys are benefitting from a new Physical Computing and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Club to develop their computer programming skills.

Boys in Years 1 to 6 at the independent day school in South Croydon can take part in the weekly club, which has been set up in collaboration with microGeeks, a local group of software engineers whose aim is to encourage more young people into computer programming and physical computing.

Pupils attending the club can engage in basic coding projects and have access to a variety of programming software, such as Scratch programming, BBC micro:bit Block Editor, JavaScript and Lego WeDo. Pupils will also be exploring AI (Artificial Intelligence) Robotics over the coming weeks.

Mrs Anu Gogineni, Head of Computing at Elmhurst School for Boys and member of microGeeks, said: “Here at Elmhurst, we pride ourselves on equipping boys with the skills they need to excel in the 21st Century. As Computer Programming gains in popularity and importance, we have been exploring ways of introducing additional Computer Science concepts and approaches to learning, in a fun and interactive way. Our Physical Computing and STEM Club is proving very popular with pupils and we are looking forward to supporting the boys in developing their skills further.”

Ayush, a Year 5 pupil at Elmhurst School for Boys, said: “I think Physical Computing Club is very fun because we get to learn new things and it really improves our knowledge. It also helps to give us an idea of what we want to do in our future lives.”

Mikaeel, also in Year 5 at Elmhurst School for Boys, said: “I like Physical Computing Club because I really enjoy coding and creating things. The club helps me to believe that I can do anything.”
