Edenhurst Prep School wins two awards in the Newcastle in Bloom Competition

Posted on: 19 Oct 2017

Children and staff at Edenhurst Prep School are celebrating after scooping two awards at the annual Newcastle in Bloom contest.

Edenhurst, located in the Westlands, celebrated the award for Best Eco School.  They also picked up a silver-gilt prize in the allotment category.

Teacher Julie Heyhoe-Kirkbride joined other green-fingered residents, community groups, businesses and schools at the New Vic Theatre on Saturday, 14 October to find out the results of the summer contest.

Julie said: “This is the second year we have entered the competition and we are pleased to have picked up an award again.

“We have an allotment In Lyme Valley where pupils can grow fruit and vegetables and learn about plant life. We are also involved in a lot of other things such as the litter pledge where we take part in a litter pick of the local area three times a year.”

Julie added: “We were very surprised to get the award for best eco school but we are very happy because it helps us towards our goal of achieving the green flag award.”

The School, which was recently graded “Excellent” by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), was praised by inspectors for its “exceptionally strong commitment to ecological awareness with even the youngest children working to gain eco credits at home and school.”

Cllr. Amelia Rout, Cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “I would like to thank everyone who took part in this year’s fantastic campaign and congratulate them on their outstanding achievements. You have all helped to make Newcastle a better place to live, work and invest.”
